Son of Norway’s Crown Princess Jailed for Four Years

Marius Borg Høiby, the son of Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit and stepson of Crown Prince Haakon, has been sentenced to four years in prison following one of the most closely watched criminal trials in modern Norwegian history. An Oslo court delivered the verdict on 15 June 2026 after a lengthy trial that attracted widespread media attention across Norway and internationally.

The 29-year-old was found guilty of multiple offences, including two counts of rape, domestic abuse and other criminal acts. Prosecutors had originally sought a sentence of more than seven years, while the defence argued for a significantly shorter prison term. The court ultimately imposed a four-year sentence.

Høiby denied the rape allegations throughout the proceedings but admitted responsibility for some lesser offences. The court convicted him on dozens of charges while acquitting him of several others. He has announced plans to appeal the verdict.

Although Høiby has no royal title and does not carry out official duties on behalf of the Norwegian monarchy, his close connection to the royal family ensured intense public scrutiny of the case. The trial has prompted debate in Norway about domestic violence, sexual offences and accountability, regardless of social status or family connections.

The court also ordered Høiby to pay compensation to several victims. Norwegian media described the case as one of the most significant scandals to affect the country’s royal family in recent decades. The royal household has largely refrained from commenting on the outcome, maintaining that the judicial process should proceed independently.

The conviction marks a major moment for Norway’s justice system, with the case receiving national attention due to both the seriousness of the allegations and Høiby’s connection to the future king and queen of Norway. As the appeals process begins, the case is expected to remain a significant topic of discussion across the country.
