Former Police Officer and Welsh Football Official Barred Following Gross Misconduct Findings
A former Greater Manchester Police officer who was found to have committed serious sexual misconduct has been barred from policing and suspended from his role as a referees officer with the Football Association of Wales after details of the case became public.
Michael Jones, from Gwersyllt in Wrexham, was the subject of a police misconduct hearing that concluded his behaviour amounted to gross misconduct. The panel found that he had repeatedly pursued inappropriate sexual conduct while serving as a police officer, leading to his placement on the national police barred list, preventing him from returning to policing in England and Wales.
Following the revelations, the Football Association of Wales confirmed that Jones had been suspended from his duties as a referees officer for north-east Wales while the matter is considered. The case has prompted questions about vetting procedures for officials working in grassroots football and other public-facing organisations.
Police misconduct panels are responsible for determining whether officers have breached the Standards of Professional Behaviour. In cases where gross misconduct is proven, sanctions can include dismissal or placement on the barred list, which prohibits future employment in policing.
The case has renewed discussion about professional standards, public confidence, and the importance of robust safeguarding measures in both policing and sporting organisations. Authorities continue to emphasise that those entrusted with positions of responsibility must maintain the highest standards of integrity and conduct.
