Metropolitan Police Officer Rupert Edwards Dismissed After Rape Conviction

Former Metropolitan Police officer PC Rupert Edwards has been dismissed from the force after being convicted of rape, bringing an end to his policing career and placing him on the College of Policing’s barred list.

Edwards, who served with the Metropolitan Police’s South West Command Unit, was found guilty at Southwark Crown Court of raping a woman while he was off duty in January 2018. The offence was reported to police in October 2023, leading to an investigation, criminal prosecution and eventual conviction.

Following the conviction, the Metropolitan Police held an accelerated misconduct hearing on 23 June 2026. The hearing concluded that Edwards had committed gross misconduct by bringing discredit upon the police service. He was dismissed without notice and added to the College of Policing Barred List, preventing him from serving in policing or certain other law enforcement roles in the future.

The Metropolitan Police described the offence as “despicable” and praised the victim for her courage in reporting what had happened. Senior officers also commended the detectives who carried out the investigation, stating that they worked diligently to gather evidence and present the strongest possible case before the court.

During the criminal trial, prosecutors were permitted to present evidence relating to two earlier rape allegations involving Edwards, despite previous acquittals in those separate cases. The court heard that this evidence demonstrated similarities in his behaviour and was admitted as part of the prosecution’s case in the 2018 offence.

The case has added to ongoing efforts by the Metropolitan Police to improve standards and remove officers who commit serious criminal offences. Police leaders have stated that officers who abuse the trust placed in them have no place in the service and that misconduct of this nature undermines public confidence in policing.
