Former Minister Ann Widdecombe Killed as Murder Investigation Continues
Former Conservative minister and Reform UK spokesperson Ann Widdecombe has died at the age of 78 after being found with serious injuries at her home in Haytor, Devon. Police have launched a murder investigation, and enquiries remain ongoing.
Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed that a 28-year-old man was arrested in South Yorkshire on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody. Investigators have stressed that the inquiry is in its early stages and that no charges have been brought.
Police have also stated that, based on the evidence currently available, there is nothing to suggest the killing was politically motivated or linked to terrorism. Officers have appealed to the public to avoid speculation while the investigation continues, saying unverified claims could cause additional distress to the family and hinder the inquiry.
According to investigators, Widdecombe is believed to have died approximately a day before her body was discovered. Detectives have received more than 120 pieces of information from members of the public and continue to carry out forensic examinations and witness interviews.
Ann Widdecombe served as a Conservative MP from 1987 until 2010 and held ministerial roles in John Major’s government before later joining the Brexit Party and subsequently Reform UK. She also became well known to television audiences through appearances on programmes including Strictly Come Dancing and Celebrity Big Brother.
Tributes have been paid from across the political spectrum, with leaders recognising her long career in public service and offering condolences to her family and friends. Police have said the investigation remains active and have urged anyone with relevant information to come forward.
