King Harald V of Norway Dies Aged 89 After More Than Three Decades on the Throne
Norway is mourning the death of King Harald V, who has passed away at the age of 89 after more than 35 years as the country’s monarch.
King Harald V died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital on Friday, August 28, 2026, at 6:35am, according to an announcement from the Norwegian Royal Court.
Born on February 21, 1937, Harald became King of Norway in January 1991 following the death of his father, King Olav V. He went on to become one of Europe’s longest-serving monarchs and was widely regarded as a unifying figure within Norwegian society.
During his reign, King Harald became known for his approachable personality and his efforts to represent modern Norwegian society. He was particularly praised for speaking about tolerance, diversity and the importance of bringing people together.
His leadership was especially significant following the devastating terrorist attacks of July 22, 2011. The King provided emotional support to the Norwegian people during one of the country’s darkest periods and became an important symbol of national unity.
King Harald was also passionate about sailing and represented Norway at three Olympic Games. His marriage to Queen Sonja, whom he married in 1968, was regarded as an important moment in the modernisation of the Norwegian monarchy.
The Royal Court confirmed that the King had died peacefully in hospital. His death has prompted national mourning, with flags being lowered and tributes being paid across Norway.
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said the country was mourning while expressing gratitude for the King’s long life of service. He described Harald as a monarch who helped bring people together during difficult moments.
Following King Harald’s death, his son, Crown Prince Haakon, automatically became Norway’s new monarch. The succession will now begin a new chapter for the Norwegian royal family and the country.
King Harald leaves behind Queen Sonja, his children and grandchildren, as well as a legacy spanning more than three decades at the centre of Norwegian public life.
For many Norwegians, his death marks the end of an era. A monarch who dedicated much of his life to serving his country is now being remembered as a symbol of stability, compassion and national unity.
