Colombia Earthquake: Deadly 7.4-Magnitude Quake Leaves Communities Devastated

A powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday, 10 August, causing widespread destruction across several cities and communities. The earthquake struck near San José del Palmar in the Chocó region and was felt across a large area of the country.
Hundreds killed as rescue operation continues
The disaster has become one of Colombia’s most serious earthquakes in decades. By Thursday, reports put the death toll at at least 265 people, with thousands injured and hundreds still missing as rescue teams searched collapsed buildings.
Cities including Cali, Pereira, Manizales and Quibdó have suffered significant damage. Homes, schools, hospitals and other infrastructure have been damaged or destroyed, leaving thousands of people without secure accommodation.
Race against time
Emergency workers have been working around the clock, using specialist equipment as well as their hands to search through rubble for survivors. Rescue teams have repeatedly called for silence around collapsed buildings so they can listen for people who may still be trapped.
The first 48 to 72 hours following a major earthquake are considered particularly important for finding survivors, although people can survive longer when they have access to water and other resources.
More than 150 aftershocks have reportedly followed the main earthquake, creating additional dangers for rescuers and residents returning to damaged areas.
International assistance
The scale of the disaster has triggered international support. The European Union has announced €2.1 million in emergency humanitarian assistance to help provide life-saving support to affected communities.
Aid organisations say thousands of people have lost their homes and urgently require shelter, food, clean water and medical assistance.
A nation facing a long recovery
As search-and-rescue operations continue, attention is beginning to turn towards the enormous task of rebuilding damaged communities. The Colombian government has declared an economic emergency and announced measures aimed at supporting reconstruction and relief efforts.
For families waiting for news of missing relatives, however, the immediate priority remains finding survivors.
Colombia now faces a long road to recovery after one of the most destructive earthquakes to hit the country in recent history.
