Jamaica Reaffirms Regional Solidarity with Humanitarian Support for Disaster Recovery
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Government of Jamaica has reaffirmed its commitment to regional cooperation by providing humanitarian assistance to support disaster recovery efforts in Venezuela following the devastating earthquakes that struck the country in late June.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Kamina Johnson Smith said Jamaica’s contribution forms part of a wider Caribbean Community (CARICOM) relief effort coordinated through Guyana. The assistance includes pharmaceutical supplies and food items aimed at helping communities affected by the disaster.
The minister noted that the support reflects Jamaica’s longstanding belief in regional solidarity, particularly during times of crisis.
“Although Jamaica is still in its recovery and rebuilding stage, we have not forgotten the hand of friendship extended to us by Venezuela in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Melissa,” she said, highlighting the importance of Caribbean nations supporting one another when disasters strike.
The earthquakes caused significant loss of life, widespread injuries, and extensive damage to homes and infrastructure, prompting an international humanitarian response. Jamaica joined other CARICOM member states in contributing relief supplies and assistance to aid recovery efforts.
Officials said the humanitarian contribution demonstrates Jamaica’s continued commitment to strengthening regional partnerships and ensuring that neighbouring countries receive support when faced with natural disasters.
As recovery operations continue, Jamaica has expressed its condolences to those who lost loved ones and reaffirmed its readiness to work alongside regional and international partners to help affected communities rebuild.
