British Man, 20, Shot Dead in Philadelphia Amid Alleged Links to ‘Travelling Conmen’ Group

A 20-year-old British man from Essex has been shot dead in Philadelphia, United States, after an altercation at a residential property where he had been working as part of a construction crew.

Salis Hanrahan was killed on 8 July 2026 in the Roxborough area of Philadelphia. Witnesses told NBC Philadelphia that an argument took place inside the property before Hanrahan reportedly left the house and collapsed outside with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police subsequently arrested the homeowner, 75-year-old George Barr. He has been charged with murder, possession of an instrument of crime and reckless endangerment. The charges are allegations, and the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain a matter for the American justice system.

Alleged links to organised fraud

The case took another turn after US authorities said Hanrahan had alleged links to the Travelling Conmen Fraud Group, described by the US Department of Homeland Security as a transnational criminal organisation connected to Britain and Ireland.

According to the DHS, Hanrahan had previously been denied an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) because authorities had determined that he had an affiliation with the organisation. Officials also alleged that he entered the United States without lawful immigration status and subsequently worked as part of a construction crew.

The group has been accused by American authorities of targeting homeowners by offering construction or repair work and then persuading victims that their properties require expensive and unnecessary repairs.

US prosecutors have previously brought cases involving people allegedly connected to similar travelling-conman operations. In one case cited by The Independent, an Irish national was sentenced to 56 months in federal prison after being convicted of wire fraud involving more than $1 million in losses.

A young life ends violently

Despite the allegations surrounding Hanrahan’s background, his death has also prompted tributes from people who knew him in Britain.

His former boxing club, Colchester Amateur Boxing Club, paid tribute to the young man, describing his death as a devastating loss and remembering him for the laughter he brought to those around him.

The shooting highlights the dangerous circumstances that can arise when organised crime allegations, immigration issues and disputes at private properties collide.

However, it is important to distinguish allegations of criminal association from proven criminal convictions. The circumstances of Hanrahan’s alleged involvement with the organisation and the events that led to his death should be treated as matters established by evidence and official investigations rather than assumptions.

Meanwhile, George Barr’s murder charge will proceed through the US legal system, where prosecutors will have to prove the allegations against him beyond a reasonable doubt.
