More Than 800 People Missing After Devastating Nepal Flash Floods
A catastrophic flash flood in Nepal has left more than 800 people missing, as rescue teams continue a desperate search for survivors following one of the country’s most devastating recent disasters.
Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reported that 826 people were missing, while at least 165 people had died. The figures remain subject to change as authorities reach areas that have been cut off by floodwater, mud and debris.
The disaster struck on Wednesday, August 26, along the Nepal–China border, particularly in the Rasuwa district. A powerful surge of water, mud and rocks swept through communities, destroying homes, roads, bridges and other infrastructure.
Tourists among those missing
A particularly worrying aspect of the disaster is the large number of tourists and foreign nationals reported missing. Nepal’s Tourism Board said 590 tourists were out of contact, including 476 foreign visitors and 114 Nepali tourists.
Among the foreign nationals reported missing were 177 Indians, 63 Americans, 53 Ukrainians, 34 Australians and 33 British nationals.
Many people had been travelling through the Himalayan region as tourists, trekkers or pilgrims, while others were working on infrastructure and hydropower projects.
What caused the disaster?
Initial reports suggested that an earthquake may have played a role, but subsequent assessments indicated that the catastrophe was linked to a glacial collapse and massive ice-and-rock avalanche in the Himalayas.
The collapse sent an enormous quantity of water, ice, rock and sediment into the river system, creating a devastating flash flood downstream. The resulting torrent travelled through the Lhende Khola and Bhote Koshi river systems before affecting communities in Nepal.
Rescue operation continues
Nepali soldiers, police and emergency workers are searching riverbanks and damaged communities for missing people. Helicopters have also been used to evacuate survivors and reach areas where roads and bridges have been destroyed.
Authorities have warned that the true scale of the disaster may not yet be known because communications have been disrupted and some areas remain difficult to access.
The flood has also caused major destruction on the Tibetan side of the border, where hundreds of additional people have been reported missing. When Nepal and Tibet are considered together, the number of missing people has been reported at more than 1300.
For families waiting for news of loved ones, the search remains a race against time. Rescue teams are continuing to work through dangerous conditions in the hope of finding more survivors.
