Masked ‘British Patriots’ Block Dover Port in Anti-Immigration Protest
DOVER, KENT — Hundreds of anti-immigration protesters descended on the roads surrounding the Port of Dover, blocking traffic and temporarily bringing parts of Britain’s busiest ferry port to a standstill.
The demonstration took place on Saturday, 5 September, with many protesters dressed in black and wearing balaclavas. They were heard chanting slogans including “stop the boats” and “send them back”, in opposition to migrants crossing the English Channel in small boats.
The protesters described themselves as patriots seeking tougher action against illegal immigration. The group has been associated in reports with Patriot Platform, a newly formed anti-migrant organisation that has been active in protests around southern England.
Port traffic disrupted
The blockade caused significant disruption around Dover, with roads approaching the port becoming heavily congested. The Port of Dover reported that traffic entering and leaving the port was temporarily stopped because of an ongoing public-order incident.
Police officers attended the scene and engaged with protesters, while the road network around Dover experienced substantial delays. Access to the port was subsequently restored and ferry services were able to resume.
The disruption affected not only migrants and immigration operations but also ordinary passengers, freight drivers, businesses and residents who rely on the port as a major connection between Britain and France.
Government condemns protest
The British government condemned what it described as intimidating and unacceptable behaviour, while acknowledging that peaceful protest remains an important democratic right.
The government said demonstrations must not cross the line into disorder or intimidation. Police have also faced questions over how hundreds of protesters were able to organise the blockade and occupy roads around such an important international transport hub.
Immigration remains highly divisive
The protest highlights the continuing political tension surrounding small-boat crossings of the English Channel.
Supporters of the demonstration argue that the Government needs to do more to secure Britain’s borders and prevent people from making dangerous journeys across the Channel. Critics argue that blocking ports and intimidating people is not a legitimate way to address the UK’s immigration system.
The Dover protest was followed by another major anti-migrant demonstration in Portsmouth after a boat carrying asylum seekers arrived on the Hampshire coast, showing how rapidly tensions over Channel migration are spreading beyond Dover.
For Dover, however, the immediate concern was the disruption caused to one of Britain’s most important international transport routes.
The events have renewed debate over how the UK should balance the right to protest, border security and the need to maintain public order while the country continues to grapple with the politically sensitive issue of Channel migration.
