Royal Mail Worker Jailed After Diverting Drug Parcels
A Royal Mail worker has been jailed after abusing his position at a logistics centre in Slough to divert parcels suspected of containing cannabis.
Amjad Ali, 50, was sentenced at Reading Crown Court on 3 September 2026 to six years and nine months in prison after admitting a series of offences connected to the scheme.
According to Thames Valley Police, Ali worked at a Royal Mail logistics centre where he was able to identify parcels suspected of containing drugs while they were awaiting X-ray examination. Instead of allowing the parcels to continue through the normal process, he dishonestly removed some of them and relabelled them for alternative addresses, including his own.
Police said the offending took place repeatedly between 2024 and 2025.
More than £1.2 million in cash discovered
The investigation took a major turn in December 2025 when officers from Thames Valley Police’s Berkshire East Disruptions Team carried out warrants at locations linked to Ali, including his home, vehicle and a storage facility.
Officers discovered £1,185,420 in cash inside a storage locker and another £42,290 at his home. The total of more than £1.2 million was described by Thames Valley Police as the force’s largest cash seizure.
Investigators believe the money represented proceeds from the onward sale of cannabis.
Ali pleaded guilty to offences including being concerned in the supply of a Class B drug, theft of parcels, possessing criminal property and possession of an offensive weapon in a private place.
Abuse of trust
The case highlights how criminal activity can exploit positions within legitimate businesses. Ali’s access to the postal system allegedly gave him an opportunity to identify and divert parcels before they reached their intended destinations.
Police investigating the case said the substantial cash seizure demonstrated the scale of the profits associated with the operation.
Royal Mail has also stressed that the safety and security of the mail is a priority and that it takes criminal activity involving its network seriously.
The case sends a clear warning that employees who use their positions to facilitate criminal activity can face serious consequences. In Ali’s case, the consequences were almost seven years behind bars and the seizure of more than £1.2 million believed to be connected to his criminal activities.
