Boris Johnson Narrowly Escapes Russian Drone Strike as Train Behind Him Is Hit

Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson was caught up in a dramatic security scare in Ukraine after a Russian drone struck a train near the Polish border shortly after his diplomatic train had passed through the area.

The incident happened on Sunday near Yahodyn, close to the Ukraine-Poland border, as Johnson and other European figures were travelling back from a security conference in Kyiv.

Johnson was travelling on a diplomatic train alongside former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt and European security advisers. Their train had reportedly left Yahodyn earlier than scheduled amid heightened security concerns.

Minutes later, a Russian drone struck a locomotive belonging to another passenger train.

Ukrainian railway authorities said the diplomatic train may have been the intended target, although there has been no independent confirmation that Johnson himself was specifically targeted.

Train Hit Near NATO Border

The attack took place only around 2 kilometres from Poland, a NATO member, dramatically highlighting the growing risks surrounding Russia’s war in Ukraine.

The passenger train was evacuated after an incoming-drone warning, meaning passengers and railway staff were able to reach safety before the impact. No casualties were reported.

Former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt later shared footage showing the aftermath and confirmed that the damaged train was travelling behind the diplomatic service.

The incident has raised fresh questions about the security of European politicians travelling through Ukraine and whether Russia is increasingly willing to strike infrastructure close to NATO territory.

Johnson Condemns the Attack

Johnson condemned the strike as a senseless attack and praised Ukrainian railway workers for their response.

The former prime minister has remained a prominent supporter of Ukraine since Russia launched its full-scale invasion and has repeatedly called for Western countries to provide Kyiv with greater military and financial assistance.

The strike came during a wider Russian assault involving hundreds of drones and missiles across Ukraine, with casualties reported elsewhere in the country.

A Narrow Escape

For those travelling on Johnson’s train, the episode represented a frightening reminder of how quickly the war can threaten even high-profile international visitors.

Had the diplomatic train remained at Yahodyn for longer, the consequences could have been dramatically different.

Instead, railway security procedures and a change to the timetable meant the train had already moved on when the drone struck.

The incident has now intensified concerns about attacks on Ukraine’s railway network and the possibility of the conflict increasingly spilling towards Europe’s NATO frontier.
