Andy Burnham Meets Donald Trump at UN Conference in New York
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has held his first face-to-face meeting with US President Donald Trump at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The meeting took place on Tuesday, 22 September, on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly and marked the first time the two leaders had met in person. They had previously spoken by telephone since Burnham became prime minister.
Talks Focus on UK-US Relations
The discussions covered a range of international and economic issues, including trade, immigration, Ukraine and the Falkland Islands. The leaders also discussed the wider UK-US relationship and areas where the two countries could work together.
Burnham said after the meeting that he and Trump had “established a good connection” during their early discussions and that the relationship between Britain and the United States remained extremely important.
Trump described Burnham positively following their talks, calling him a “natural businessperson” and saying he believed the British prime minister had significant strengths to work with. Trump also said the relationship with Britain was doing well under Burnham.
Differences Remain
Despite the positive tone, the meeting also highlighted disagreements between Washington and London.
One major issue was the UK’s agreement concerning the Chagos Islands and the Diego Garcia military base. Trump criticised the agreement, describing it as a “terrible deal”, while the UK government has maintained its position on the arrangement.
The two governments also have differences over several foreign-policy issues, meaning the meeting was not simply about strengthening relations but also about managing areas where Britain and the United States disagree.
A Significant Diplomatic Meeting
The meeting comes as Burnham begins his role on the international stage and seeks to establish Britain’s relationships with major allies.
For Trump, the encounter was part of a wider programme of meetings with world leaders during the UN General Assembly.
The talks demonstrate the importance of the UK-US relationship, while also showing that close allies can have significant disagreements over foreign policy, trade and international affairs.
