Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Dies Aged 76
Dubai has entered a period of mourning following the death of Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, a senior member of Dubai’s ruling family, who has died aged 76.
Sheikh Ahmed, the younger brother of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, died on September 21, 2026.
The Dubai Ruler’s Court announced a 10-day official mourning period, with flags across the emirate flown at half-mast.
A life of public service
Sheikh Ahmed held several senior positions during a long public career. He served as Deputy Chairman of Dubai Police and Public Security and was also Group Chairman of ARM Holding, a Dubai-based private investment company.
He was also an influential figure in the development of sport and horse racing in Dubai.
Sheikh Ahmed was closely associated with Al Wasl Sports Club, helping guide the organisation for decades. He also played an important role in establishing the Jebel Ali Racecourse, founded in 1990, and was involved in the growth of Dubai’s international horse-racing scene.
His involvement in racing included ownership of several successful thoroughbreds, including the famous Mtoto, as well as Addeybb and Iffraaj.
Tributes from the ruling family
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid paid an emotional tribute to his younger brother, saying that although Sheikh Ahmed was no longer with them, he would remain in their prayers and hearts.
UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan also expressed his condolences, highlighting Sheikh Ahmed’s longstanding contribution to the development of the UAE.
Tributes were also received from leaders and institutions across the region and internationally.
Funeral and mourning
Funeral prayers were held at Zabeel Grand Mosque in Dubai, before Sheikh Ahmed was laid to rest at Umm Hurair cemetery.
The 10-day mourning period marked a solemn moment for Dubai and the wider UAE as the ruling family, government institutions and members of the public remembered a figure who had spent decades involved in the emirate’s security, business and sporting life.
A lasting legacy
Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum leaves behind a legacy spanning public service, business, football, horse racing and community life.
His death at 76 has prompted widespread condolences, while Dubai continues to honour his memory during the official mourning period.
