Google Quantum Computing Breakthrough: 99.99% Accuracy Marks Major Scientific Milestone

Google has announced a significant development in quantum computing, demonstrating a technique that achieved 99.99% logical fidelity on its Willow quantum processor. The breakthrough, announced on 15 October 2026, could help overcome one of the biggest obstacles preventing quantum computers from becoming practical tools for solving complex problems.

The achievement is particularly important because it focuses on reducing errors in specialised quantum operations — a crucial step towards building more reliable and powerful computers.

How does the technology work?

Google's breakthrough uses a technique called magic state cultivation. It helps produce highly reliable quantum states that are essential for carrying out certain advanced calculations.

Traditional computers use bits represented as either zero or one. Quantum computers use quantum bits, or qubits, which operate according to the laws of quantum mechanics. However, qubits are vulnerable to errors caused by noise and other disturbances.

Google's new method works by checking quantum states for errors and filtering out flawed results before those states are used in more complex computations. This could make future quantum computers more efficient and reduce the resources needed to perform useful calculations.

Is quantum computing ready to change the world?

Not yet. Google says the technique still needs to be demonstrated at a larger scale before it can become practical for large-scale computing. The latest achievement is an important experimental milestone, but it does not mean that every quantum operation is now 99.99% accurate or that a fully fault-tolerant quantum computer is ready for everyday use.

The bottom line: Google's 99.99% logical-fidelity result is a significant step towards making quantum computing more reliable. The next challenge is scaling the technique so that future machines can solve valuable real-world problems consistently.
