NIKE TAKES OVER LONDON CITY AIRPORT RUNWAY FOR WOMEN’S NIGHT RUN!

Around 5,000 runners take part in a spectacular 10K event as an airport runway becomes an extraordinary sporting stage.

LONDON, UK — 25 October 2026

Thousands of women laced up their running shoes for an unforgettable night in East London as sports giant Nike brought its After Dark Tour to London City Airport, transforming part of the airport’s runway into an extraordinary running course.

The event took place on Saturday, 17 October 2026, attracting approximately 5,000 runners for a sold-out 10K race through the Royal Docks and onto a section of the airport runway. The event offered a rare opportunity to run across a surface normally reserved for aircraft.

Despite reports suggesting that Nike had shut down the airport, London City Airport was not permanently closed. The race was scheduled outside the airport’s operating hours, meaning normal flight operations were not disrupted.

A RUNWAY LIKE NO OTHER

The unusual course started and finished at Silverworks Island, taking runners along the Royal Docks waterfront and past Millennium Mills before reaching the airport runway.

With the London skyline providing a dramatic backdrop, participants experienced a unique combination of urban scenery, competitive running and nighttime entertainment.

Nike promoted the route as part of its global After Dark Tour, a women-focused running series designed to encourage participation in sport, build confidence and bring communities together.

EMPOWERING WOMEN THROUGH SPORT

The event was about more than speed and fitness. It aimed to celebrate women in running, welcoming participants with different levels of experience, from beginners to seasoned athletes.

The evening featured DJs, athlete hosts, an event expo and a post-race celebration, creating a festival atmosphere around the sporting challenge.

Nike’s wider After Dark initiative launched in 2025 and has continued to expand internationally, bringing women together through running events in major cities around the world.

WHY LONDON CITY AIRPORT?

Using an airport runway made the London event stand out from conventional road races. The flat surface also offered runners an unusual setting in which to challenge their personal bests.

However, the runway was used temporarily for the organised event. There has been no announcement that London City Airport is being permanently converted into a running track.

THE FINAL WORD

Nike’s After Dark London 10K demonstrated how familiar urban spaces can be used in creative ways to promote fitness, confidence and community spirit.

For the thousands who took part, it was a chance to experience London from a different perspective — running beneath the night sky on one of the capital’s most unusual sporting routes.
