ELON MUSK EYES THE FUTURE OF AI IN SPACE! BILLIONAIRE SAYS DATA CENTRES IN ORBIT ARE LOOKING “VERY APPEALING”

Could the next generation of artificial intelligence be powered by computers orbiting Earth?

Elon Musk has once again turned his attention towards the future of technology, suggesting that building data centres in space is becoming an increasingly attractive option.

In a post on his social media platform X on 4 November 2026, Musk said: “Data centres in space looking pretty appealing right now.”

His comments have reignited discussions about the possibility of moving some of the world’s most powerful computing infrastructure beyond Earth’s atmosphere.

WHY DOES MUSK WANT DATA CENTRES IN SPACE?

The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence has created enormous demand for computing power. Traditional data centres require huge amounts of electricity, land and cooling systems to keep thousands of computer servers operating.

Musk believes space could offer an alternative.

His vision involves using solar-powered satellites equipped with powerful computer systems to process information and support the growing demand for AI technology.

One major attraction is the availability of sunlight in orbit, potentially providing a continuous source of solar energy depending on the satellite’s position.

SPACEX AND THE RACE FOR SPACE-BASED AI

Through SpaceX and its artificial intelligence company xAI, Musk has been exploring ways to expand computing infrastructure into orbit.

His ambitions include deploying large networks of satellites capable of handling AI workloads.

If successful, the technology could eventually reduce the reliance on enormous data-centre facilities built on Earth.

However, turning this vision into reality would require major advances in satellite manufacturing, launch technology and computing infrastructure.

THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES

Despite the excitement, experts have raised several concerns.

1. Extreme temperatures: Computers generate enormous amounts of heat. Although space is cold, the vacuum makes removing heat particularly difficult.

2. Expensive launches: Transporting thousands of tonnes of equipment into orbit would require substantial investment and reliable reusable rockets.

3. Space debris: Increasing the number of satellites could create additional collision risks and make orbital traffic more difficult to manage.

4. Maintenance: Unlike traditional data centres, satellites cannot easily be accessed by engineers when computer equipment breaks down.

WHAT COULD THIS MEAN FOR THE FUTURE?

If Musk’s ambitions become reality, the way the world operates artificial intelligence could change dramatically.

Space-based data centres could eventually become part of the infrastructure supporting AI applications, digital services and global computing networks.

Other major technology companies are also investigating orbital computing, suggesting that the idea is attracting interest across the technology industry.

222 NEWS – THE BIGGER PICTURE

Elon Musk’s latest comments highlight how quickly the technology industry is changing.

As artificial intelligence continues to grow, companies are searching for new ways to overcome electricity shortages, rising infrastructure costs and increasing demand for computing power.

The question is no longer simply how much computing power the world needs, but where that power will come from.

Could the next generation of the internet and artificial intelligence eventually be powered from space?

For now, the idea remains an ambitious technological project, but the race to make it possible is gathering attention.
