Over time, this causes the ground to stretch, crack, and sink.

One of the most striking examples occurred in 2005 in Ethiopia’s Afar region. A series of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions suddenly tore open a fissure nearly 40 miles long in just days — something rarely seen on land.

Schoolboy, 12, Fatally Wounded on Walk Home in Tragic Attack

A 12-year-old boy has died after being fatally wounded while walking home from school, in a case that has left a community in shock and reignited concerns over youth violence.

The victim, Leo Ross, was making his way through a park in Birmingham when he was suddenly attacked. Emergency services were called to the scene after the young boy was discovered seriously injured by a member of the public.

Despite the efforts of paramedics, who rushed him to hospital, he later died from his injuries.  

A Random and Brutal Assault

Police later confirmed that Leo had been stabbed in the stomach in what was described as a “random” and senseless act of violence. Investigators believe the attacker and the victim were not known to each other.  

The incident happened in broad daylight, at a time when many children were returning home from school, raising fears among parents and residents about safety in public spaces.

A teenage suspect was quickly identified and arrested. The 15-year-old later admitted responsibility for the attack, pleading guilty to murder in court.  

Community in Mourning

Tributes poured in for Leo, who was described by family, friends, and teachers as a kind, bright, and much-loved boy with his whole life ahead of him.

Flowers, messages, and candles were left near the scene as the community came together to remember him. His death has left a lasting impact on classmates and teachers, many of whom received counselling support in the days following the tragedy.

Justice and Sentencing

At Birmingham Crown Court, the teenage killer was sentenced to life in custody, with a minimum term of 13 years.  

The judge described the attack as senseless and highlighted the devastating impact on Leo’s family, calling the loss “immeasurable.”

Wider Concerns Over Youth Violence

The case has once again brought attention to the growing issue of knife crime involving young people across the UK. Campaigners and community leaders have called for stronger intervention, better youth support services, and tighter controls to prevent weapons from falling into the hands of minors.
