Italian Man Caught Dressing as His Dead Mother to Illegally Claim Her Pension
In a bizarre and shocking case that has stunned authorities, an Italian man has been arrested after allegedly disguising himself as his deceased mother in order to continue collecting her pension payments.
The man, reported to be in his 50s, is said to have kept up the elaborate deception for several months following his mother’s death. According to investigators, he repeatedly dressed in her clothes, wore a wig and makeup, and even mimicked her walk and voice to fool officials during in-person pension verifications required by the local government.
Authorities began to suspect foul play when staff at a post office in the Campania region noticed something unusual about the “elderly woman” who routinely came in to collect pension payments. Despite the individual’s heavy makeup, sunglasses, and scarf, employees were concerned by the person’s odd behaviour and increasingly unconvincing appearance.
Police launched an investigation and later confronted the man, who reportedly confessed to the scheme. Officers searching his home discovered his mother’s clothing carefully laid out, along with wigs, accessories, and documentation relating to her pension.
Local officials described the case as “deeply disturbing and disrespectful,” emphasising that the man not only committed fraud but also attempted to exploit a system designed to support vulnerable pensioners. Prosecutors say he continued to claim the benefits long after his mother’s death was never officially reported.
The man is now facing multiple charges, including fraud against the state and impersonation. Authorities are also examining whether additional benefits or social services were claimed under his mother’s name.
The case has reignited conversations in Italy about pension fraud and the vulnerability of social welfare systems. Officials have pledged to tighten in-person verification procedures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Residents in the town expressed disbelief, with some calling the act “macabre” and others saying it reflects growing desperation in difficult economic times. Still, officials stressed that financial hardship can never justify criminal behaviour.
