Anthony Joshua Injured in Fatal Car Crash in Nigeria — Two People Killed

Ogun State, Nigeria — British heavyweight boxing icon Anthony Joshua has been injured in a serious road accident in Nigeria that tragically killed two people, officials and eyewitnesses said on Monday.

The 36-year-old former world heavyweight champion was travelling as a passenger on the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State when the SUV he was in collided with a stationary truck near the Sagamu/Makun area.

Crash Details and Casualties

According to local police and emergency officials, the vehicle — reportedly a Lexus SUV — crashed into the parked truck in circumstances that remain under investigation. Joshua was seated in the rear of the vehicle, which was part of a small convoy.

Tragically, two other occupants in the vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities have not yet been released as authorities continue their enquiries.

Eyewitness footage circulating on social media shows chaotic scenes at the crash site, with bystanders and first responders assisting those involved. Some clips also show Joshua appearing dazed and in pain as he was helped out of the wrecked vehicle.

Joshua’s Condition

Police and local authorities say Joshua sustained minor injuries and was conscious and breathing after the accident. He was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Early reports suggest he is expected to recover from his injuries.

Officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other emergency agencies were deployed to manage the accident site and investigate the cause of the collision. Traffic along the busy expressway was partially disrupted as rescue operations continued.

Joshua’s Visit to Nigeria

Joshua, who holds British and Nigerian heritage and often visits the country, was in Nigeria following a high-profile bout in the United States just days earlier. On December 19, 2025, he scored a sixth-round knockout victory over Jake Paul in Miami — his first major win since returning to competitive boxing after a long hiatus.

The crash has raised concerns about his scheduled future fights, including a potential matchup against Tyson Fury in 2026, though promoters and his management team are yet to release an official statement on how the accident could affect upcoming plans.

Reactions and Next Steps

Messages of concern and support have poured in from fans around the world as details continue to emerge. Nigerian authorities have appealed for calm and urged motorists to exercise caution while travelling on the expressway.

Further official statements from Joshua’s camp and Nigerian police are expected as investigations proceed.
