Man Faked Heart Attacks in Restaurants to Avoid Paying Bills

A man has been exposed after repeatedly faking heart attacks in restaurants in an elaborate scheme to avoid paying for his meals. The scam, which unfolded over several months, left restaurant staff shocked and emergency services unnecessarily stretched.

According to reports, the man would dine at mid-range to expensive restaurants, order large meals — often including alcohol — and wait until the bill arrived. At that moment, he would clutch his chest, collapse to the floor, and appear to suffer a medical emergency. Panicked staff would rush to help, call emergency services, and focus on saving his life rather than collecting payment.

In each incident, the man was taken away by ambulance, leaving the restaurant unpaid. By the time staff realised what had happened, the diner was gone and the bill remained unsettled.

The pattern only became clear when multiple restaurant owners began sharing similar stories. CCTV footage, staff descriptions, and identical methods revealed the same individual had targeted several establishments using the same fake medical crisis. Investigators later confirmed that the man showed no signs of genuine heart conditions and had recovered suspiciously quickly after each “attack”.

Authorities described the behaviour as calculated fraud, pointing out that the man knowingly abused emergency response systems and placed unnecessary strain on medical services. Restaurant owners also criticised the emotional impact on staff, many of whom believed they were witnessing a customer die.

The man now faces charges related to fraud and misuse of emergency services. Legal experts say he could also be held responsible for ambulance costs and unpaid bills, which reportedly total thousands.

The case has sparked wider discussion about how businesses can protect themselves from scams without appearing insensitive during genuine emergencies. While experts stress that staff should always prioritise health and safety, they also urge better information-sharing between businesses to identify repeat offenders.

Authorities have reminded the public that faking medical emergencies is not a harmless trick but a serious offence that diverts lifesaving resources from those who truly need them.
