Prison Officer Charlotte Winstanley Sacked, Faces Criminal Conviction After Intimate Relationship With Inmate
Sheffield, UK – A former prison officer has been dismissed from her position and sentenced to prison after engaging in a prolonged and inappropriate relationship with a serving inmate, during which she expressed a desire to have his children and smuggled contraband into the facility.
Charlotte Winstanley, 27, who was employed at HMP Lindholme in South Yorkshire, was found guilty at Sheffield Crown Court of misconduct in public office and transmitting an unauthorised photograph from inside a prison. She received a custodial sentence of two and a half years following evidence that she had maintained a “substantial sexual relationship” with prisoner Jabhari Blair, 30.
Relationship, CCTV Evidence and Messages
According to court evidence, Winstanley began a relationship with Blair not long after starting her role at the category C prison. CCTV footage played in court showed the pair in intimate situations within prison premises, including touching and disappearing together into private rooms.
Prosecutors also presented a series of private messages between the two, in which Winstanley made highly personal and emotive statements. In one text, she told Blair, “I’m literally praying to have your babies,” and in others referred to “date nights” and expressed her love for him. Blair’s messages reportedly reciprocated those sentiments, including expressing eagerness to have a “beautiful baby” with Winstanley.
Abuse of Position and Smuggling
Beyond their intimate relationship, the court heard that Winstanley also abused her position of trust by smuggling contraband items into the prison. This included a mobile phone and other unauthorised items which Blair used to communicate with her and to arrange further contact. She additionally provided the prisoner with information about prison operations, including movement of inmates and cell searches, and even visited Blair’s family outside prison to advance their relationship.
The prosecutor described her actions as seriously undermining the authority and security of the prison system. The judge overseeing the case labelled it “arguably the worst case” of its kind he had encountered, noting that Winstanley’s conduct went far beyond typical boundary breaches by correctional staff.
Suspension, Dismissal and Ongoing Impact
Winstanley was suspended from her role at the prison service once the relationship came to light, and has now been formally dismissed from her position. Her sentence reflects the seriousness with which the courts view corruption and misconduct among those entrusted with public safety.
Blair also received additional sentencing for possession of cannabis and unauthorised mobile devices.
The case has attracted significant attention as an example of the risks posed when correctional staff overstep professional boundaries, and it adds to a growing number of similar cases that have prompted calls for strengthened training and supervision within the prison service.
