U.S. Man Who Attempted to Kill Donald Trump Sentenced to Life in Prison

In a high-profile federal case that drew national attention, Ryan Wesley Routh, 59, has been sentenced to life in prison for his attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump at a golf course in Florida in 2024. The sentencing, delivered on 4 February 2026, came after Routh was convicted last September on multiple felony charges related to the plot.

The Plot and Arrest

On 15 September 2024, Routh lay concealed in thick shrubbery near the edge of the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, with a rifle and tactical gear, waiting for Trump — who was then campaigning for a second term — to appear. Shortly before Routh could act, a U.S. Secret Service agent spotted the barrel of his weapon and fired at him, foiling the attack. Routh fled the scene but was arrested later the same day a short distance away. Investigators recovered a semiautomatic rifle, body armor, backpacks and a camera outfitted to record the attempted ambush.

Trial and Conviction

Routh was charged with five federal counts, including attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate, assaulting a federal officer, and multiple firearms offenses. Despite repeatedly representing himself — a decision that led to procedural clashes in court — a federal jury convicted him on all charges after just a few hours of deliberation during the 2025 trial. Prosecutors presented evidence of meticulous planning and premeditation, arguing that Routh had spent weeks preparing for the attack.

During the trial, Routh maintained he had never intended to fire his weapon, a defense the jury ultimately rejected. At one point as the guilty verdict was read, he reportedly attempted to injure himself in the courtroom, an act that underscored the dramatic and troubled tenor of the proceedings.

Sentencing and Judge’s Remarks

In the sentencing hearing, U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon condemned Routh’s actions as “deliberate” and “evil” — remarks echoed by prosecutors who called his conduct a grave threat to public safety and democratic norms. Judge Cannon imposed a life sentence without the possibility of parole, along with an additional seven years for a separate firearm offense. The extra prison time is mandatory under federal law.

Judge Cannon rejected the defense’s request for a reduced sentence — which had argued for 27 years behind bars — stressing the severity of Routh’s intent and efforts. At sentencing, Routh reportedly acknowledged his conviction but made defiant remarks, saying, “Nothing stands before you but a hollow American shell.”

Broader Context

The assassination attempt was the second major attack on Trump’s life during the heated 2024 election campaign. Earlier that year at a rally in Pennsylvania, another man opened fire and grazed Trump’s ear, heightening concerns about the safety of political figures and underscoring deep divisions in U.S. political life.

The Justice Department, including then-Attorney General Pam Bondi, praised the conviction as a demonstration of the federal government’s commitment to prosecuting politically motivated violence to the fullest extent.

Conclusion

With the sentencing now complete, Routh will spend the rest of his life behind bars — a stark outcome that federal officials say reflects the gravity of plotting violence against a national leader and the importance of safeguarding public officials and democratic institutions from politically driven attacks.
