London’s Burning Actor John Alford Found Dead in Prison After Child Abuse Conviction
Former television actor John Alford has been found dead in prison just weeks after beginning a jail sentence for sexually abusing two teenage girls.
The 54-year-old, who rose to fame in the popular TV drama London’s Burning, was discovered unresponsive in his cell at HMP Bure on Friday. Prison officials confirmed his death and said an investigation has been launched, as is standard procedure when someone dies in custody.
Alford had been jailed earlier this year after a court found him guilty of multiple sexual offences against two girls aged 14 and 15. The case was heard at St Albans Crown Court, where jurors were told the assaults took place in 2022 at a house in Hertfordshire.
Prosecutors said the girls had been drinking alcohol and were vulnerable when the abuse occurred. Alford denied the allegations during the trial but was convicted by a jury and sentenced to eight and a half years in prison.
The actor had once enjoyed a successful television career. He first appeared as a teenager in the BBC school drama Grange Hill before later becoming widely known for his role as firefighter Billy Ray in London’s Burning during the 1990s.
However, his career had long been overshadowed by legal problems. In 1999 he served time in prison after being convicted of supplying drugs to an undercover journalist, a scandal that effectively ended his mainstream acting career.
Following news of his death, the UK Prison Service confirmed that the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will conduct an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding what happened. Authorities have not yet released further details about the cause of death.
Deaths in custody are routinely investigated to determine whether prison procedures were followed and to establish the exact circumstances of the incident.
The case has drawn renewed attention because of Alford’s once high-profile television career and the serious offences that led to his imprisonment.
