Metropolitan Police Officer Charged With Stalking and Harassment
A serving officer with the Metropolitan Police Service has appeared in court after being charged with stalking and harassing a woman, in a case that has raised fresh concerns about standards within the force.
Police Constable Samson Akinnawo, 35, appeared before Thames Magistrates’ Court accused of repeatedly contacting and harassing a woman over several months. Prosecutors allege the officer targeted the victim, named in court as Melieka Daley, between June and August of last year.
According to court documents, Akinnawo allegedly made repeated phone calls and sent numerous messages to the woman despite being told to stop. He is also accused of turning up at her home and telling her he had followed her from her workplace. Prosecutors say the behaviour caused the victim serious distress and significantly disrupted her daily life.
The case has attracted particular attention because Akinnawo previously appeared in recruitment advertisements for the Metropolitan Police. In 2024 he was featured in the force’s “Change Needs You” campaign, where he spoke about his ambition to become a police officer and encouraged others to join the service.
During the hearing, Akinnawo admitted one charge of failing to provide the passcode to his mobile phone when requested by investigators. However, he has not yet entered pleas to the stalking and harassment charges.
District Judge Lisa Towell granted the officer conditional bail ahead of a further hearing at Snaresbrook Crown Court scheduled for April 10, where he is expected to enter formal pleas.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that Akinnawo, who previously worked as a prison officer and a bus driver before joining the force, has been suspended from duty while the criminal proceedings continue. At the time of the alleged offences he was attached to the Met’s Specialist Operations unit.
The case comes at a sensitive time for the Metropolitan Police, which has faced repeated scrutiny over officer conduct and internal vetting processes in recent years. The outcome of the trial is likely to be closely watched as the force continues efforts to rebuild public trust.
