Chaos at WHCD as shots fired and Trump rushed off stage
A night meant to celebrate journalism and political tradition turned into panic and confusion after gunfire erupted at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner (WHCD) in Washington, D.C., forcing Donald Trump and JD Vance to be rushed off stage by Secret Service agents.
The incident unfolded on the evening of April 25, 2026, at the Washington Hilton, where more than 2,000 guests—including politicians, journalists, and celebrities—had gathered. Just minutes into the event, loud “bangs” were heard near the venue’s main security screening area, triggering immediate alarm inside the ballroom.
Panic inside the ballroom
Witnesses described scenes of chaos as attendees ducked under tables while armed security personnel flooded the room. Secret Service agents swiftly surrounded Trump, who had been seated at the head table on stage, and escorted him to safety along with Vice President JD Vance and other senior officials.
Some guests reported hearing multiple shots, while others initially thought the sounds were part of the evening’s entertainment before realising the seriousness of the situation. Within seconds, the formal dinner atmosphere gave way to fear, with shouts of “get down” echoing across the venue.
Armed suspect stopped
Authorities later confirmed that a lone gunman had approached the security checkpoint outside the ballroom armed with weapons including a firearm. He was quickly confronted and subdued by law enforcement before reaching the main event space.
One Secret Service agent was struck during the confrontation but was protected by a bullet-resistant vest and is expected to recover. No guests inside the ballroom were seriously injured.
The suspect is now in custody, and investigators are working to determine a motive.
Trump and officials safe
Following the evacuation, Trump confirmed that he, the First Lady, and Vice President JD Vance were unharmed. He praised the rapid response of the Secret Service and law enforcement, calling their actions “brave” and decisive.
The president was moved to a secure location within the hotel before later returning to the White House.
Event cancelled amid security concerns
The WHCD—one of Washington’s most high-profile annual events—was ultimately cancelled, with organisers saying it will be rescheduled. The incident has raised fresh concerns about security arrangements at large public gatherings, particularly those involving high-ranking political figures.
A stark reminder
The dramatic scenes serve as a reminder of the ongoing risks surrounding political events in the United States. What was meant to be an evening of humour and unity between the press and the presidency instead highlighted the ever-present threat of violence—and the critical role of security forces in preventing tragedy.
As investigations continue, questions remain over how the attacker was able to get so close to such a heavily guarded event, and whether further security changes will be introduced in the future.
