Wiz Khalifa Placed on Romanian Wanted List After Drug Conviction
American rapper Wiz Khalifa has reportedly been placed on Romania’s wanted persons list after failing to serve a nine-month prison sentence handed down over a drug possession conviction linked to a music festival appearance in the country.
The case stems from July 2024, when the rapper, whose real name is Thomaz Cameron Jibril, was arrested after performing at the Beach, Please! Festival on Romania’s Black Sea coast. Authorities alleged that he smoked cannabis on stage and was found in possession of more than 18 grams of cannabis. He was initially detained before being released pending legal proceedings.
A lower court originally imposed a fine of 3,600 Romanian lei (around £650/$830), but prosecutors appealed the decision, arguing that the punishment was too lenient. The appeal was successful, and an appellate court later sentenced the rapper to nine months in prison under Romania’s strict drug laws.
Lawyers acting for Khalifa subsequently challenged the sentence, seeking to overturn the ruling. However, the appeal was rejected by the court, which upheld the prison term and made the conviction final.
Following the final judgment, Romanian police added the rapper to their wanted persons database, meaning authorities can seek his detention if he enters Romanian jurisdiction. Reports indicate that Romanian authorities may also pursue international judicial cooperation measures to locate and potentially extradite him should legal conditions be met.
At the time of his original arrest, Khalifa apologised publicly, stating that he had not intended any disrespect towards Romania and praising officials for their professional treatment of him. He was released shortly after the incident and continued his international touring schedule.
Romania maintains some of the toughest anti-drug legislation in Europe, with possession of cannabis remaining a criminal offence. The case has sparked debate among fans and legal commentators over the severity of the punishment for a non-violent drug offence, particularly given the growing trend toward cannabis decriminalisation in other countries.
For now, the Grammy-nominated artist faces significant legal uncertainty in Europe as Romanian authorities continue efforts to enforce the sentence, while questions remain over whether extradition proceedings will ultimately be pursued.
