America Was Once Home to Hundreds of Native American Nations
Long before the United States was established, North America was inhabited by hundreds of Indigenous nations with their own languages, cultures, governments and territories.
Native American peoples had lived across the continent for thousands of years before European colonisation began. Communities ranged from the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois Confederacy) in the northeast to the Cherokee in the southeast, the Lakota and other Plains nations in the Great Plains, and numerous nations across the Pacific Northwest, Southwest and California.
These societies developed complex political systems, trading networks, agricultural practices and technologies. Some built large settlements and cities, while others followed seasonal patterns of hunting, fishing and farming.
The arrival of European settlers from the late 15th century onwards dramatically changed the continent. European expansion brought warfare, disease, displacement and the seizure of Indigenous lands. Diseases such as smallpox caused devastating population losses among communities that had little previous exposure to them.
As European colonies expanded and, later, the United States was created in 1776, Native American territories were progressively reduced through warfare, treaties, forced removals and government policies.
One of the most notorious examples was the Trail of Tears, when thousands of Cherokee people and members of other southeastern nations were forcibly removed from their homelands during the 1830s. Many died during the journey.
It is therefore broadly accurate to say that Indigenous peoples controlled and governed much of what is now the United States before European colonisation. However, North America was not controlled by one unified Native American government or a single people. It was home to hundreds of distinct nations, each with its own political structures and territories.
Today, Native American nations remain an important part of American history and continue to maintain their cultures, languages, communities and forms of government.
