Care Home Worker Jailed for Child Sexual Offences After Abusing Vulnerable Children
A former children’s care home worker has been sentenced to 11 years in prison after being convicted of a series of child sexual offences committed against vulnerable young people in his care.
Abdalraham Katende, 30, of Ferme Park Road, Haringey, was sentenced at Snaresbrook Crown Court on 8 July 2026. He was convicted of rape of a child, sexual activity with a child, causing a child to watch a sexual act, and failing to provide access to electronic devices during a police investigation.
The Metropolitan Police said Katende abused his position of trust while working as a support worker at a children’s care home, where he targeted vulnerable residents.
The investigation began after two victims bravely disclosed the abuse they had suffered while living at the home. Detectives discovered that in October 2023, Katende raped a 15-year-old girl after approaching her while she was preparing food in the home’s kitchen. The victim screamed and managed to escape.
He was also convicted of causing a 14-year-old resident to watch an explicit video on his mobile phone depicting himself engaged in sexual activity with a woman. Police said both offences involved the exploitation of vulnerable children placed in his care.
During the investigation, officers identified a mobile phone believed to contain crucial evidence. When Katende repeatedly refused to provide the PIN to unlock the device, detectives secured a court-approved order under Section 49 of the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA). His continued refusal resulted in an additional criminal conviction and was presented in court as evidence that he had attempted to obstruct the investigation.
Detective Constable Nick Baker praised the courage of the victims for coming forward, stating that their evidence helped bring “a dangerous offender who abused a position of trust” to justice. He added that the Metropolitan Police remain committed to pursuing offenders and supporting victims of sexual abuse, regardless of how much time has passed since the offences occurred.
One victim described the abuse as having a lasting impact on her life and encouraged others who have experienced similar crimes to speak out, saying it is never too late to seek justice.
The Metropolitan Police said the case highlights the importance of safeguarding vulnerable children and ensuring those who abuse positions of trust are held accountable through the criminal justice system.
