Manchester Farmer Killed by Man Impersonating Police Officer

A rural community on the outskirts of Manchester has been left in shock after a well-known local farmer was killed by a man posing as a police officer. The victim, identified by neighbours as 58-year-old David Hollins, was found dead on his farm late Thursday evening following what authorities have described as a “targeted and calculated attack.”

According to Greater Manchester Police (GMP), the suspect arrived at Hollins Farm, located near the village of Worsley, driving a vehicle fitted with flashing blue lights and false police markings. Witnesses say the man, dressed in a black tactical-style uniform, claimed to be conducting an official investigation and ordered Mr. Hollins outside before a violent altercation ensued.

Emergency services were called after nearby residents heard shouting and a single gunshot. Despite efforts from paramedics, Mr. Hollins was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect fled before police arrived.

Detective Chief Inspector Sarah Lang from GMP’s Major Incident Team said the force was “appalled” by the incident and confirmed that a manhunt is underway.

“This is a disturbing and deeply deceptive crime. Someone deliberately pretended to be a police officer to gain access to Mr. Hollins’s property and has taken his life in cold blood. We are pursuing every lead to bring this individual to justice,” Lang stated.

Forensic teams spent much of Friday combing the area, while officers conducted door-to-door inquiries. CCTV footage from nearby roads is also being reviewed to trace the fake police vehicle, believed to be a dark-coloured SUV.

Friends described Hollins as a “gentle and hardworking man” who had farmed the same land for over three decades. “He’d help anyone — a proper old-school farmer,” said local resident Anne Pearson. “To think someone tricked him like that makes it even worse.”

The incident has raised fresh concerns about individuals impersonating law enforcement officers, with police reminding the public that genuine officers will always carry proper identification

County Council Under Fire for Spending £75,000 on British Flags — Patriotic Gesture or Political Statement.

A county council has come under scrutiny after approving a £75,000 budget to purchase and display thousands of British flags across the region. The move, which council leaders describe as a “symbol of unity and national pride,” has sparked a heated debate over whether such spending is an appropriate use of public funds — particularly during a time of economic strain and rising community tensions.

According to documents released this week, the money was allocated to install flags on council buildings, lamp posts, and public squares. The initiative reportedly aims to “boost morale” and “reinforce community identity” following recent social unrest and global conflicts that have impacted local cohesion.

However, critics argue the decision is tone-deaf. Many residents have questioned whether such symbolic gestures justify the cost at a time when councils are cutting essential services, from public transport routes to youth programmes.

One opposition councillor said:

“Spending £75,000 on flags while families are struggling to pay their bills sends the wrong message. Patriotism should not come at the expense of public welfare.”

Supporters of the initiative, however, say the flags are a timely response to growing social division, helping to foster unity amid international conflicts and domestic polarisation. A council spokesperson defended the expenditure, stating:

“This initiative is about bringing communities together under one symbol — the flag represents resilience and shared identity. In times of uncertainty, a visible show of national solidarity can make a real difference.”

Public opinion remains split. Some residents have praised the effort as a welcome reminder of British pride, while others see it as an unnecessary political statement intended to distract from deeper local issues.

As the debate continues, questions remain over whether symbolic displays of patriotism can meaningfully strengthen community ties — or if they simply mask the financial and social challenges many councils currently face.

Was the £75,000 well spent, That may depend on whether residents view the flags as a rallying point for unity or an expensive gesture at the taxpayers’ expense.

£10 million boost to protect Muslim communities amid rising hate crime

On 23 October 2025, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced a significant new security funding package aimed at protecting Muslim communities and places of worship across the country.

The announcement

During a visit to Peacehaven Mosque in East Sussex—recently subject to a suspected arson attack—Starmer revealed an additional £10 million will be made available for the protection of mosques, Muslim faith centres and Muslim-faith schools.

The funding comes on top of ~£29.4 million already allocated this year for a similar scheme.

The scheme aims to fund CCTV systemsalarm systems, secure fencing, security personnel and other protective security measures.

Why now

The government cited a marked rise in anti-Muslim hate crimes: in the year ending March 2025, anti-Muslim incidents rose by 19 %, and Muslims were the target in 44 % of all religious hate crimes.

The Peacehaven Mosque attack appears to have been the trigger for the timing of the announcement, with three arrests made in the wake of that incident.

What’s being said

Starmer said:

“Britain is a proud and tolerant country. Attacks on any community are attacks on our entire nation and our values. This funding will provide Muslim communities with the protection they need and deserve, allowing them to live in peace and safety.”

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood described the attack on Peacehaven Mosque as “an appalling crime, that could easily have led to an even more devastating outcome.” She emphasised the right “to follow the faith of our choosing, and to live free from hatred and fear.”

Community reaction has been broadly positive: for example, the chief executive of the British Muslim TrustAkeela Ahmed, welcomed the announcement, stating that many in the Muslim community “have become fearful and apprehensive” and that the funding will “play a key role in helping members of Britain’s Muslim communities feel the safety and reassurance they need and deserve.”

Implications & analysis

This move signals a few important things:

It recognises that places of worship—and in particular mosques and Muslim faith centres—are experiencing heightened risk and require targeted protection. The statistics support such recognition.

Politically, it underscores the government’s commitment (at least in rhetoric) to protecting minority faith communities and tackling hate crime.

Strategically, the funding addresses security infrastructure (CCTV, alarms, fencing) rather than broader structural issues (such as social cohesioncommunity-police trust, or root causes of hate crime). That has both advantages (quickly implementable) and limits (does not on its own build community resilience).

From a fiscal viewpoint, this is an incremental funding boost—but it builds on existing schemes, meaning the total available for these protections this year will now exceed £39 million.

Some critics argue that focusing funding in this way may prompt questions about fairness (i.e., why this community rather than others), or about whether security spending is sufficient without accompanying preventative work. For example, opposition voices have asked: “what about churches?” when religious hate-crime protection is discussed.

Key challenges ahead

Implementation: Ensuring that the funds reach the mosques/faith centres most at risk, and that security upgrades are effectively carried out.

Prevention: Security measures are reactive rather than proactive. The causes of hate crime—prejudice, social alienation, radicalisation—still require long-term work.

Equity and perception: While the funding is targeted, the government may face questions from other religious communities or civil society groups about why similar amounts are not earmarked for them, or how to ensure fairness.

Monitoring and accountability: Tracking the impact of the funding—does it reduce attacks, does it increase community confidence, is the money well spent? These will be crucial.

Broader social cohesion: Ensuring that Muslim communities feel safe is vital, but so is reinforcing cross-community solidarity so that security measures don’t inadvertently send a message that certain communities are inherently under siege or separate.

Conclusion

The £10 million boost announced by Prime Minister Keir Starmer is a significant and visible step in the UK government’s response to rising anti-Muslim hate crime. It demonstrates a recognition of a real and growing threat faced by mosques and Muslim faith centres across Britain. Yet while the security funding is welcome and necessary, it also represents only one part of what will need to be a comprehensive strategy—one that combines protection, prevention, community building, and accountability.

In his own words, Starmer emphasised a vision of “a Britain built for all” and the government’s commitment to “delivering safer streets for everyone – and that means protecting places of worship from those who seek to divide us through hate and violence.”   Whether this investment will help move the country closer to that vision will depend on how it is implemented, integrated with broader efforts, and perceived on the ground.

A promising future derailed

Introduction

A young British student, Mia O’Brien (23 / 24), from Merseyside, UK, finds herself facing what amounts to a life sentence in the United Arab Emirates for a drug offence. Her story raises stark questions about travel advice, foreign legal systems, and the risks faced by foreigners caught in severe jurisdictions.

The facts of the case

Mia O’Brien, a law student from Liverpool, was visiting Dubai when in October she was arrested after authorities discovered around 50 grams of cocaine in an apartment she was staying at.

According to her mother, Mia admitted taking “a line of cocaine” and insisted she did not intend to deal drugs.

The trial reportedly lasted one day, was conducted in Arabic, and culminated in a conviction on 25 July.

She was sentenced to 25 years in prison, plus a fine of about £100,000. In the UAE system this term is considered “life” for such offences (15–25 years is commonly the range).

Mia is being held in the Dubai Central Prison (also known as Al-Awir), which reports from human rights organisations cite as having extremely harsh conditions.

Understanding UAE drug laws and the context

Under the laws of the United Arab Emirates, drug offences — even possession of a small amount, or presence of drugs in one’s body or system — can lead to very severe penalties.

Life sentences for drug trafficking or supplying are common; some cases involve even harsher outcomes. For example, in 2018 a British national and an Australian student were jailed for life after being found guilty of possessing marijuana “for trading purposes” in Dubai.

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) issues travel advice spelling out that “life sentence” in the UAE may mean 15–25 years in prison for drug offences.

The human impact

Mia’s mother has described her daughter as “absolutely devastated” — a law student whose ambition was to become a solicitor. She laments that a “very stupid mistake” has derailed everything.

According to the reports, Mia shares a cell with six other inmates, sleeps on a mattress on the floor, and faces conditions which include severe overcrowding and limited rights to communicate.

The family set up fundraising efforts to cover legal appeals/travel expenses, though one major fundraising platform removed their page citing its rules.

Key questions raised

1. Fairness of process: A one-day trial in Arabic when the defendant may not speak Arabic, raises serious concerns about due process.

2. Proportionality: Many in the UK see 25 years for this offence as extreme. But this is under a different legal system with very different norms.

3. Foreign nationals and travel risk: The case illustrates how a trip abroad, even for a short holiday, can carry enormous risk when one becomes subject to another country’s laws.

4. Diplomatic / consular support: How much can the UK government do when one of its citizens is subject to foreign law? The role of consular assistance, negotiation, and legal recourse is vital but limited.

5. Prison conditions and human rights: The reports of the prison highlight issues with overcrowding, lack of oversight, and possible mistreatment, raising wider concerns beyond this one case.

What this means for readers (and for prospective travellers)

If you’re travelling abroad — especially somewhere with strict drug laws like the UAE — it’s crucial to understand and obey those laws. What might be a relatively minor offence at home can lead to life-altering consequences abroad.

If someone is detained abroad: seek urgent legal representation, contact one’s home country’s consular services, and ensure that any statements are made with legal advice.

For the UK public: the story prompts reflection on how British citizens abroad are supported when facing foreign legal systems, and what “help” realistically means.

For those working in or writing about law, criminal justice, or international relations: this case exemplifies the tension between national sovereignty (each country sets its laws) and universal human rights / fairness norms.

Conclusion

Mia O’Brien’s sentencing in Dubai is a powerful cautionary tale. A promising young law student from the UK is now set to spend decades in prison, overseas, under a legal system whose rules she may not have fully appreciated.

While her family argues that she made a mistake, the case underscores that in some jurisdictions the margin for error is virtually non-existent. It challenges us to think about justice, travel, and the fate of individuals caught up in systems far from home.

Man Arrested After Spraying HIV-Positive Blood Into Hospital Employee’s Eyes

In a shocking and disturbing incident, a man has been arrested after allegedly removing his intravenous (IV) line and spraying HIV-positive blood into the eyes of a hospital employee. The attack took place inside a medical facility where the suspect was being treated, leaving staff members shaken and raising serious concerns about workplace safety in healthcare environments.

According to police reports, the incident occurred after the man became agitated while receiving treatment. Witnesses claim he ripped out his IV line before aggressively confronting staff. In the struggle, he is said to have deliberately squeezed or flicked blood from the line, striking one hospital worker directly in the face and eyes.

The victim, who has not been named for privacy reasons, was immediately taken to an emergency decontamination area and placed under post-exposure medical monitoring. Hospital officials have confirmed that the employee is receiving antiviral prophylactic treatment to reduce the risk of infection, and counselling has been offered to all affected staff.

Police officers were called to the scene shortly after the assault, and the suspect was taken into custody. He has since been charged with assault causing bodily harm and exposure to a biological hazard, offences that carry severe penalties under UK law.

A hospital spokesperson described the event as “a horrifying attack on one of our dedicated healthcare workers” and emphasized that violence against staff will not be tolerated. “Our employees come to work to help people, not to be assaulted or placed in danger,” the statement read.

Public health experts note that while the risk of HIV transmission through this type of exposure is relatively low, the psychological trauma for victims in such incidents can be immense. Dr. Eleanor Briggs, an infectious disease specialist, said, “Even when the risk of infection is medically small, the emotional impact of being targeted with blood in this way is enormous. It’s an act meant to cause fear.”

The suspect remains in custody pending a psychiatric evaluation. Authorities are reviewing hospital security footage and interviewing witnesses to determine the exact sequence of events.

This shocking case highlights ongoing concerns about safety within hospitals and the challenges healthcare workers face when dealing with volatile patients. Investigators have promised a full inquiry, while unions are once again calling for increased protections and legal consequences for those who attack medical staff.

The victim is said to be recovering at home and has asked for privacy during what hospital officials described as “an incredibly distressing time.”

Dear 222 News viewers, sponsored by smileband,

Backgrounds

Elon Musk

Elon Musk is a well-known global figure: founder/co-founder of companies such as Tesla, Inc., SpaceXxAI and others.

His wealth is closely tracked by major financial media, his stakes in large publicly- and privately-held companies are relatively transparent (or at least estimated). For example, his stake in Tesla is about 12% and his stake in SpaceX about 42%.

Various sources estimate his net worth in 2025 in the range of USD 300-500 billion.

King Xenodzi Dogbey II

King Xenodzi is the traditional ruler (Dufia) of Worgbato-Klikor in Ghana’s Volta Region.

He is described in some media as an “inventor”, humanitarian, and promoter of indigenous science and innovation.

He is also self-described or described by some sources as Africa’s first “trillionaire”, with various claims about enormous assets.

The Wealth Claims

For Elon Musk

According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Musk’s net worth has been estimated at around USD 470 billion as of October 2025.

Other sources place his net worth as lower (e.g., circa USD 340–420 billion) depending on Tesla stock, SpaceX valuation and other assets.

Importantly, these figures are derived from publicly-available data on stock holdings, valuation estimates of private companies, and are subject to revision.

For King Xenodzi

There is no credible, independently‐audited figure for his net worth. One Ghanaian media outlet notes:

“Although some blogs place King Xenodzi’s wealth at $18 billion, others claim a more modest figure of $120 million, while sensational social-media narratives push the claim as high as $915 billion–$1 trillion. However, none of these estimates are officially verified…”

Some promotional articles claim he is a “first African trillionaire” and have ambitious economic programmes (e.g., giving USD 2,000 to every Ghanaian registrant).

As of now, the available evidence supports only that he is a prominent traditional leader with regional influence and entrepreneurial/innovation activity — the massive wealth claims remain unverified.

Rising star felled by tragedy

British grime and rap artist Ghetts — real name Justin Clarke‑Samuel, aged 41 — has been remanded in custody after being charged in connection with a fatal hit-and-run incident in Ilford, north-east London.

According to the Metropolitan Police, the incident occurred on Saturday 18 October on Redbridge Lane East in Ilford, where Ghetts is alleged to have struck a 20-year-old man and failed to stop at the scene. The victim later died in hospital on the day of Ghetts’ appearance at court.

The rapper appeared at Stratford Magistrates’ Court on Monday (20 October) and was charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving. It is expected that the charge will be upgraded to causing death by dangerous driving at his next hearing, following the victim’s death.

He is currently remanded in custody and the next hearing was scheduled for Monday 27 October at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court.

From grime pioneer to charged defendant

Ghetts has been a prominent figure in the UK grime scene since the early 2000s, releasing his debut mixtape 2000 & Life in 2005.

He achieved mainstream recognition with albums including On Purpose, With Purpose (2024), and collaborations with major artists such as StormzySkepta and Ed Sheeran.

He also recently featured as an actor in the Netflix series Supacell, further raising his profile outside music.

Legal context & possible consequences

In UK law, causing death by dangerous driving is among the most serious motoring offences. While the maximum penalty had been 14 years imprisonment, changes in recent years have allowed for longer sentences and reflect a tougher stance.

Key aggravating features in this case appear to include:

The victim died as a result of the collision.

The driver is alleged to have failed to stop at the scene (a hit-and-run).

Being a high-profile figure, public interest is elevated.

These factors together may influence sentencing if convicted.

Impact & questions raised

For the victim’s family: A young life lost, and the legal process has commenced. The victim’s name has not yet been publicly released.

For the music community: A respected grime artist now facing serious criminal charges, causing shock and reflection within the community.

For public road safety: The case reiterates concerns about dangerous driving, hit-and-runs and accountability of drivers.

For Ghetts’ career and legacy: This incident marks a pivot point. Regardless of how the legal process plays out, the ramifications on reputation, endorsements, future work and public perception will be profound.

What happens next?

The next scheduled court hearing (Barkingside Magistrates’ Court) will likely address bail, charges and whether the charge is upgraded to causing death by dangerous driving.

Investigations continue; the police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

If the charge is upgraded and conviction follows, sentencing will depend on the full facts (speed, intoxication, intent, stopping/-fleeing, previous record etc.).

The public, the music industry and stakeholders will monitor closely how the case is managed, the legal outcomes, and again how celebrities/ public figures are treated under the law.

Concluding thoughts

What began as a highly-respected career in grime and UK music now faces a very serious legal challenge. The allegations against Ghetts are grave: a hit-and-run that resulted in death, and the implications are heavy both legally and personally. The case is still in early stages: charged, remanded, under investigation.

It remains to be seen how the proceedings will develop, what evidence will emerge (including CCTV, witness testimony, forensic data), and ultimately how justice will be served—for the victim and for the respondent.

China Sinks Servers in the Ocean to Cool Temperatures — Cutting Energy Use by Up to 90%

In a bold step toward greener technology, China has begun deploying large-scale underwater data centres — effectively sinking servers deep beneath the ocean to harness natural cooling and drastically cut energy consumption. The initiative, led by Chinese tech companies with government backing, could reduce traditional cooling energy costs by as much as 90%, marking a major breakthrough in sustainable computing infrastructure.

A Cool Revolution Under the Sea

Data centres are the backbone of the digital age, powering everything from online banking and cloud storage to artificial intelligence and global communications. But they also consume massive amounts of electricity — particularly for cooling, which can account for nearly half of a centre’s total energy use.

By submerging data modules in cold seawater, China’s engineers have found a way to use the ocean’s naturally low temperatures to cool servers efficiently and continuously, without the need for expensive air conditioning systems. This approach could drastically reduce carbon emissions while lowering operational costs.

How It Works

The underwater facilities consist of sealed steel capsules packed with servers and networking equipment. These capsules are lowered to the seabed and connected to the mainland via fibre-optic cables and power lines. The surrounding seawater acts as a natural coolant, drawing away the heat generated by the machines.

Advanced monitoring systems ensure the data centres operate safely, with remote maintenance technology reducing the need for human intervention. The ocean environment also offers protection against natural disasters such as earthquakes or fires that can threaten land-based facilities.

Massive Energy and Environmental Savings

According to initial reports, these underwater data centres could cut electricity consumption for cooling by up to 90% compared to traditional land-based systems. Additionally, the closed-loop design prevents heat from leaking into the marine environment, maintaining ecological balance.

The move aligns with China’s broader environmental goals under its “Green Data Initiative”, which aims to make the country’s digital infrastructure more energy efficient by 2030.

Setting a Global Example

China’s underwater data experiment follows smaller trials by companies like Microsoft, which tested a similar concept off the coast of Scotland in 2018. However, China’s deployment marks the first large-scale commercial rollout of this technology, indicating a major shift in how the world may handle data processing in the future.

Tech analysts believe this innovation could set a precedent for nations seeking to balance the growing demand for cloud services with the urgent need to cut carbon emissions.

A New Depth for Digital Sustainability

If successful, China’s oceanic data farms could become a model for next-generation data infrastructure — one that leverages natural environments to sustain technological progress responsibly.

By literally taking the cloud underwater, China is demonstrating that the future of data storage may not be in the sky, but deep beneath the waves.

Donald Trump Defends Decision to Demolish White House East Wing

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has sparked outrage and fascination in equal measure after defending his controversial decision to demolish the East Wing of the White House — a move he claims is part of a “historic renovation” project to modernize America’s most iconic residence.

The East Wing, traditionally home to the offices of the First Lady and key support staff, has been a central part of the White House complex since its completion in 1942. However, Trump has described it as “outdated, inefficient, and unfit for the greatness America deserves,” arguing that the building’s aging infrastructure justified its removal.

“The East Wing was falling apart — everyone knows it,” Trump said during a televised interview at Mar-a-Lago. “We’re not destroying history; we’re making it better. The White House deserves to be as strong and beautiful as our country, and that’s exactly what we’re doing.”

A “Vision of Renewal” or a Blow to History?

Critics, however, accuse Trump of disregarding history and overstepping boundaries by altering a national landmark. Architectural historians have called the demolition “unprecedented,” warning that such actions could set a dangerous precedent for future administrations.

“The East Wing is more than bricks and mortar — it’s part of America’s story,” said Professor Alan Brooks, a historian at Georgetown University. “To remove it without broad consultation undermines the integrity of the White House as a symbol of continuity and democracy.”

Trump’s Plans for a “Freedom Pavilion

According to early reports, Trump intends to replace the East Wing with what he has dubbed the “Freedom Pavilion” — a gleaming glass and marble structure featuring exhibits on American innovation, presidential history, and “the triumph of the Trump administration.”

Renderings leaked online show a large domed hall with gold accents, gardens, and an amphitheatre for public addresses. Critics have called the proposal “egotistical,” while supporters say it could become a new tourist attraction celebrating patriotism and progress.

Political Reactions

The Biden administration has reportedly condemned the move, with officials calling it “reckless” and “unauthorised.” White House historians and preservationists have urged a full investigation into how demolition permits were approved, given the building’s historical protection status.

Still, Trump remains defiant.

“We’re not tearing America down,” he insisted. “We’re building it up — bigger, better, and stronger than ever before.”

Public Opinion Split

While some Americans see the demolition as an act of destruction, others view it as a bold step toward modernization. Online polls show a sharp divide along political lines, with Trump’s supporters praising the decision as a “refreshing change,” and opponents calling it a “national disgrace.”

As debate intensifies, one thing is certain — the future of the White House’s East Wing, and the legacy of this controversial transformation, will be discussed for decades to come.

George Stiebel: The First Black Jamaican Billionaire Who Built an Empire from Grit and Vision

George Stiebel, often remembered as Jamaica’s first Black millionaire—and widely regarded by historians as the nation’s first Black billionaire by today’s standards—was a man whose story epitomises ambition, perseverance, and self-determination in the face of racial and social barriers. Born in 1820 in Kingston, Jamaica, Stiebel rose from humble beginnings to become one of the island’s most influential businessmen and property owners during the 19th century.

Humble Beginnings

George Stiebel was born to a German Jewish father and an African Jamaican mother in a time when Jamaica’s social hierarchy was deeply influenced by race and class. Despite limited opportunities for people of African descent, Stiebel showed a remarkable entrepreneurial spirit from an early age. He began his working life as a carpenter’s apprentice before venturing into trade, where he quickly demonstrated a natural gift for business.

From Merchant to Mogul

Stiebel’s fortunes began to rise when he became involved in maritime trade. He invested in small ships that transported goods between the Caribbean islands and South America. This early success laid the foundation for his empire. However, his major breakthrough came in South America, particularly in Venezuela, where he invested in gold mining during the mid-1800s.

His gamble paid off enormously. Stiebel struck gold—literally—and became immensely wealthy. By the time he returned to Jamaica in the 1870s, his fortune had grown so vast that he stood among the richest men in the Caribbean.

A Symbol of Black Excellence

At a time when colonial Jamaica still operated under racial prejudice and economic inequality, George Stiebel’s success was revolutionary. He became a symbol of Black achievement and economic power in a society that rarely acknowledged such possibilities for people of colour.

He used his wealth not only to elevate himself but also to contribute to Jamaican society. Stiebel invested heavily in real estate, building and purchasing some of the most impressive properties on the island.

Devon House: A Monument to Legacy

His most famous creation remains Devon House, built in 1881 in Kingston. The grand Georgian-style mansion stood as a symbol of pride and independence. At a time when affluent residences were primarily owned by Europeans, Stiebel’s home was a direct challenge to colonial social norms.

Today, Devon House is one of Jamaica’s most celebrated national heritage sites—a museum and cultural landmark that honours Stiebel’s contribution to the nation’s history. The property attracts thousands of visitors each year, serving as a lasting reminder of his pioneering legacy.

Philanthropy and Influence

Beyond business, Stiebel was known for his philanthropy. He funded community projects, supported education, and provided opportunities for those less fortunate. His wealth, however, also drew envy and scrutiny, and his achievements were often met with resistance by Jamaica’s colonial elite. Still, he remained undeterred, continuing to expand his enterprises and influence.

Legacy of a Visionary

George Stiebel passed away in 1896, but his story continues to inspire generations of Jamaicans and the wider African diaspora. He was more than a businessman—he was a trailblazer who redefined what success could look like for Black people in a colonial world.

From a carpenter’s apprentice to a global entrepreneur and property magnate, Stiebel’s life is a powerful reminder that vision, courage, and determination can defy any barrier. Today, as visitors walk through the halls of Devon House, they are not just seeing a mansion—they are witnessing the enduring legacy of Jamaica’s first Black billionaire.
