Four Dead in Tragic Belgium Train Crash Involving School Minibus
A devastating train crash in Belgium has left four people dead, including two children, after a passenger train collided with a school minibus at a railway crossing in the town of Buggenhout on Tuesday morning. The tragedy has shocked the nation and prompted a major investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.
The accident occurred shortly after 8 a.m. local time as the minibus, carrying seven pupils from a special educational needs school, attempted to cross the railway tracks. Authorities say the train, travelling from Bruges towards Buggenhout, struck the vehicle at a level crossing. Despite the train driver activating the emergency brakes, the impact could not be avoided.
Among those killed were two pupils aged 12 and 15, the 49-year-old minibus driver, and a 27-year-old chaperone accompanying the children. Five other children suffered serious injuries and were rushed to hospital, where officials reported they were in stable condition.
Early findings indicate that the crossing barriers were lowered and warning lights were operating when the collision took place. Investigators are now examining how the vehicle entered the tracks despite the safety measures being active. Surveillance footage is reportedly being reviewed, while forensic experts continue their work at the scene.
The train was carrying around 100 passengers at the time of the crash. Remarkably, none of the passengers suffered serious injuries, although many were left shaken by the incident. Emergency services, including firefighters, paramedics and police officers, responded rapidly to the scene, where the minibus was left severely damaged by the force of the collision.
Belgian leaders expressed their condolences following the tragedy. Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever described the incident as heartbreaking, while Ursula von der Leyen also offered sympathy to the victims’ families and the wider community affected by the disaster. Books of condolence have been opened locally as residents mourn those who lost their lives.
The crash has renewed concerns about safety at level crossings across Belgium’s extensive rail network. Although the number of crossing accidents has declined in recent years, officials acknowledge that such incidents continue to pose significant risks. Railway infrastructure operator Infrabel has previously invested in safety improvements and the removal of hundreds of crossings nationwide, but Tuesday’s tragedy highlights the dangers that remain.
As investigators work to establish exactly what happened, the focus remains on supporting the injured children, grieving families and the local community as Belgium comes to terms with one of its most tragic transport accidents in recent years.
